Video : Officials Looking to Improve Upon Citywide WiFi System

The idea for the city's WiFi actually came about after a city meter reader was attacked by a pit bull. It serves as the impetus for the eventual citywide installation of 1,700 WiFi transmitter boxes all across the city."A lot of the things that we're doing with WiFi is not necessarily related to the public, but is certainly related to the mission of the City, and it's been very valuable in that regard," said Michael Armstrong, Director of Municipal Information Services. In fact, Corpus Christi operates the second largest city-owned Wi-Fi system in the country, second only to Oklahoma City. Armstrong said that Corpus Christi provides something most larger cities don't -- free Wi-Fi at most of its government offices and pretty much all the tourist locations, including the Bayfront, museums, and many parks and libraries. However, the major part of the Wifi system is geared toward City services. The City's WiFi system was a $7 million investment that was sold to a company called Earthlink for $5 million. When the company folded its operation, the City took it over, and the rest is history.Future plans include a $1 million upgrade that will eventually provide more free wireless hotspots across town.
