Fluke Networks increases BYOD device visibility

Fluke Networks announced a new BYOD Classification capability that reduces the cost and time needed to optimize and secure a wireless network for authorized and unauthorized smartphones and tablets.

The new over-the-air patent pending smart device detection and analysis capability, available in AirMagnet WiFi Analyzer PRO (10.5) and AirMagnet Enterprise (10.6), provides visibility into smart device type, operating system and usage details without the need to deploy end-user software agents.

According to Gartner, 821 million smart devices (smartphones and tablets) will be purchased worldwide in 2012, accounting for 70 percent of total devices sold.1 As these devices come onto corporate networks, it is increasingly critical for network engineers to be able to identify and report on them, optimize the network for BYOD in real-time, and instantly identify and take action when unauthorized devices or rogues appear.

BMW's Car Hotspot LTE means Bavarian Motor WiFi

The dedicated car phone may be a thing of the past, but the in-car hotspot is becoming increasingly common. BMW isn't shy when it comes to in-vehicle tech, so the fact that it's launching its own solution should come as no surprise. We initially heard about the ConnectedDrive LTE integration back in summer, but now it looks like it's almost here. The BMW Car Hotspot LTE is essentially a purpose-built WiFi router that houses an LTE SIM (it also supports 3G and EDGE).

Wi-Fi is in line for massive expansion in china

WLAN, which is usually referred to as Wi-Fi, allows electronic devices to exchange data wirelessly over a computer network. Because of the explosive growth of mobile data traffic, Chinese telecom operators, as well as many other enterprises, have stepped up the pace of deploying more wireless network access points across the country since 2010.

China Mobile Ltd, the world's biggest mobile carrier by subscriber numbers, aims to add 1.4 million Wi-Fi access points in China this year to reach a total access point number of 3.78 million.

Li Yue, chief executive officer of China Mobile, previously said Wi-Fi is a highly efficient network solution with the lowest deployment cost. He added China Mobile will create more than 6 million Wi-Fi access points in the future.

China Telecom Corp, the nation's smallest mobile operator, also revealed that it planned to have about 900,000 wireless network access points by the end of this year.

Zeng Jianqiu, a professor at Beijing University of Posts & Telecommunications, said WLAN is a necessary method for telecom operators to meet the rising demand for mobile data.

China has more than 1 billion mobile phone subscribers, according to statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The country is likely to overtake the United States to become the world's biggest smartphone market this year, according to a report by global data provider International Data Co.

"The network capacity of traditional 2G, 3G and even 4G telecommunication networks is not increasing as quickly as mobile data growth but Wi-Fi can greatly relieve the pressure on operators by diverting a large share of data traffic," Zeng said.

Boeing Wi-Fi flying high (Video)

A wireless signal inside an airplane can deviate randomly when people move around. Boeing’s new test process takes advantage of state-of-the-art technology and ground-breaking statistical analysis to identify strong and weak signal areas and balance them by adjusting the connectivity system accordingly. The result is increased safety and reliability.

Using their breakthrough approach, Boeing engineers applied the process to improving signal strength in passenger cabins. Using a de-commissioned airplane, the team from Boeing Test & Evaluation laboratories conducted a series of tests. The team determined that sacks of potatoes were ideal stand-ins for passengers, given their similar physical interactions with electronic signal properties. Much of the testing was conducted on the grounded airplane with the seats filled with 20,000 pounds of potatoes in sacks. The test data was then validated with human stand-in "passengers."

Once the new method was established, testing that previously took over two weeks to conduct was reduced to 10 hours. The new, efficient process promises to benefit Boeing Commercial Airplanes customers and the flying public.

Wi-Fi Forecast: Cloudy with a Chance of Showers - The Ruckus Room

Cloud computing is beginning to play a part in the Wi-Fi architecture debate, because—like many other segments of computing—it offers highly scalable capabilities that are difficult or expensive to deliver locally. The central business benefit to cloud networking is that a business of any size can now have access to an enterprise-class wireless solution that won’t overwhelm the IT staff or break the IT budget.

Clouds—whether private or public—are also enjoying favor in many business environments where distributed solutions are necessary (retail is a quintessential example). Cloud networks provide a graceful plug-n-play deployment model for remote sites and remote employees where IT staff resources are limited or non-existent. Because cloud management can be accessible from anywhere, distributed or centralized IT teams can easily manage and monitor distributed sites.

Operators join forces to simplify international Wi-Fi roaming

A group of operators including AT&T, Boingo Wireless, BT and China Mobile have joined forces to work on a common framework for Wi-Fi roaming to make it easier for users to access hotspots while travelling abroad.

Mobile operators have come to see public Wi-Fi as an important part of their networks as they face growing data usage volumes. But processes for users to connect to and roam on to Wi-Fi networks are still fragmented, according to the Wireless Broadband Association.

The industry organization leads the Wi-Fi Roaming Interoperability Compliancy Program (ICP), which aims to change that by specifying guidelines on user authentication, network selection and billing mechanisms. The goal is to make it easier for operators to enter into roaming agreements, it said.

Get a no-contract mobile hot spot that 'pays' you for sharing Wi-Fi

ou pay $79 for Karma's compact, 2.1-ounce hot spot, which can share its 4G goodness with up to eight devices. After you activate it, you get 1GB of data that doesn't expire. That's not 1GB per month, mind you, but 1GB, period.

After you blow through that, you'll pay $14 for each additional gigabyte -- a reasonable rate compared with what other carriers charge, though FreedomPop charges $10 per 1GB.

However, and here's where it gets interesting, whenever you fire up your hot spot, it creates an "open and branded" (to you) signal that anyone around you can use. If and when someone does connect to your network, you'll both get 100MB of data. That's the "karma" in question.

FCC proposes ‘super Wi-Fi’ commercial use of 3,5 GHz band in US

The Federal Communications Commission yesterday proposed opening up 100 MHz of Defense Department spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band for commercial “citizens broadband service” use while at the same time ensuring protection for military radars that operate in the band.

The FCC action followed a recommendation in July by the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology that use of the military spectrum could support development of a “super Wi-Fi system” across the country.

The 100 MHz of spectrum from the 3550-3650 MHz band the FCC proposes to allocate for commercial use would be subject to licensing in three tiers, a different approach than the current unlicensed 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz Wi-Fi bands, FCC said.
