First non-profit, community-run, high-speed internet makes history

What makes this pilot project at the two Halifax manors even more interesting is the fact they are the first "ubiquitous" wireless residential buildings in the province.

That means that you can walk from one floor to another and back again and never lose the connection as it seamlessly continues from one access point to another.

"We've been trying for more than 10 years to get this off the ground. Basically the latest chapter of the story started in March when I went to the board and said look, let's pay for it ourselves," explained Chebucto Community Net's officer manager Andrew Wright.

The project was initially expected to cost $23,000 but came under budget at $19,000. Wright said the cost for the two buildings, each with roughly 200 units, works out to about $50 per resident.

The Challenges that Arise in Monitoring 802.11ac Equipment

From WildPackets Blog : "This week, we want to focus on the process of monitoring your new 802.11ac equipment once it’s installed. Before you can monitor 802.11ac traffic, you need to be able to capture the traffic. This is true regardless of the monitoring solution used, and capturing 11ac traffic remains one of the biggest challenges with this new technology.

Let’s take just a moment and step back to see how this has been done with 802.11a/b/g/n. Wireless LAN monitoring did not come without its struggles in these bands either, but over time the industry settled into a comfortable solution using laptops with 802.11 USB WLAN adapters. This solution is highly portable, making on-site WLAN analysis easy, regardless of the location. Most solutions work with only a subset of available USB WLAN adapters, and some require a custom adapter. In either case, the key requirement is that the WLAN adapter be able to be put into “promiscuous mode,” sometimes called sniffing mode. If this capability is not exposed in the device, then it has no chance of being used as part of a WLAN network monitoring and analysis solution. This combination remains as the “go-to” solution for most WLAN analysts, both in the field and in corporate WLAN environments.

So, what’s changed in 802.11ac? Let’s take a look at a few key differences between 11ac and previous technologies that are making WLAN monitoring and analysis more difficult.

Free Wi-Fi spreads to Russian schools and metros

Russia has a population of 147 million people, 57 million of whom are Internet users. According to data from 2010, one-in-three of those 57 million use their mobile phone or another mobile device to connect to the Internet, making 19 million people potential subscribers to a service that could connect them to a free Wi-Fi network.

Most of these 19 million are concentrated in large cities with populations of over one million people—and it is in these cities that the market for free Wi-Fi services has been burgeoning in Russia’s since 2011.

More: Russian workforce stuck on social networks

According to data from wifi4free.ru, Moscow has the most Wi-Fi hotspots (1,413) of any Russian city, of which 1178 are free (leaving 235 paid).

The capital owes its position to its well-developed network of restaurants and hotels, even though other cities’ free Wi-Fi is concentrated primarily in service establishments as well.

There are, however, other areas to which free Wi-Fi has spread, such as in educational institutions, public transportation and green spaces — parks, squares and other open, public places

For Wireless LANs in Federal Agencies, Security Is in the Air

Wireless LANs pose security problems for a number of reasons. The security of the wireless LAN depends on the security of every element of the network, including mobile devices, wireless access points and wireless switches. Wireless networks are easier to access than their wired counterparts, and they are often configured more for convenience than security. But as agencies increasingly go wireless and attackers focus on wireless LANs, agencies should consider a few tactics for improving security.

Palace of Auburn Hills to debut free Wi-Fi access for fans at Beyonce's sold out Detroit concert

Fans of Beyonce will get an added (and free) perk for Saturday night's sold out show at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

The "Mrs. Carter Show World Tour" stop will mark The Palace's first event with "free, fast, secure" wireless internet access, according to a Palace Sports & Entertainment press release.

No passcode is needed for the Wi-Fi access. Smartphone can simply just select the network “Palace Wifi."

More details from the press release:

Palace Sports & Entertainment has teamed with Ericsson to raise the bar of mobile engagement and provide unparallel WI‑FI network speeds with secure and reliable access and to enable maximum content delivery capabilities for fans attending Palace concerts, events and Detroit Pistons games.

Verizon has also augmented wireless capacity at the venue with its Distributed Antennae System, or DAS, which complements the WI-FI network.

The Palace is an early adopter of Ericsson’s innovative technology designed specifically for high-density environments like the 22,000-seat arena:

· Optimally installed access points address fan requirements throughout the venue;

· Network capacity can be adjusted in real-time based on the number of requests;

· Capacity can accommodate Wi-Fi users at concerts, events and Pistons games.

“Ericsson’s end-to-end mobile broadband communications and entertainment solutions for stadiums and arenas provide a future-proof platform that supports Palace Sports & Entertainment’s commitment to taking fan engagement to the next level,” said Dave Park, Ericsson Head of Architecture, Wi-Fi Products. “Ericsson’s Wi-Fi, mobile and video technology leadership combined with our managed services expertise in high capacity, high profile venues and events is proving to be a real game changer for innovative sports and entertainment venues like The Palace of Auburn Hills.”

The innovative technology sets the stage for future live-streaming in the Pistons mobile app and the Palace Sports & Entertainment app coming this summer, allowing fans to connect to PS&E social channels, join our fan clubs, including the Blue Room entertainment affinity club, and receive special offers.

“Palace Sports & Entertainment prides itself on providing the best, innovative fan experience in the industry and our free Wi-Fi access enhances that,” said Dennis Mannion, PS&E President and CEO. “This collaboration with Ericsson combines the best of their technology with the best of our creative capabilities to thrill our fans.”

Symantec: Google Glass still vulnerable to Wi-Fi attack

Google fixed one Wi-Fi security problem with its wearable computer Glass, but Symantec says there's another problem, which has been a long-known weakness in wireless networking.

The security vendor has been analyzing Google Glass in its labs and found a second issue that is just as harmful as the now-patched QR-code vulnerability found by Lookout Mobile Security, which was made public earlier this week.

Many Wi-Fi devices regularly look for networks that they have been connected to before, wrote Candid Wueest, a threat researcher for Symantec. The behavior is convenient for users, since they don't have to manually connect to a known network, he wrote.
