Beijing buses to offer Wi-Fi

More than 10,000 buses in Beijing will offer Wi-Fi service by the end of 2013, Beijing Morning Post reported Friday.

The service followed a deal signed in April last year between China Mobile and Beijing Bus Transportation Group, which operates Beijing's bus system and will provide coverage on all routes within the Fourth Ring Road.

More than 1,800 buses have wireless Internet access so far, allowing passengers with Wi-Fi enabled devices to connect to the Internet through China Mobile's network.

Beijing has the broadest Wi-Fi coverage on buses in the country.

China Mobile will offer 20-hours a month free before June 30.

802.11ac Channel Planning

The forthcoming 802.11ac Gigabit Wi-Fi amendment will bring with it support for larger channels at 80 MHz and 160 MHz widths. This is one of the primary drivers behind the increased peak performance and bandwidth of wireless APs and clients. Therefore, careful consideration of channel widths allowed on APs and the channel plan for WLAN deployments must be made prior to an enterprise deployment.

Globalgig takes the battle against rip-off roaming charges to new territories

Personal Wi-Fi international roaming service Globalgig has announced an extension of its service to cover Hong Kong, Republic of Ireland, Denmark and Sweden.

The firm has also cut the cost of its rolling monthly flat-rate packages to a lead-in of £10 for 1GB, from £15, to £29 for 10GB.

Globalgig, which is courting the travel industry as a potential source of distribution, has also cut the cost of the device from £79 to £50.

It claims to offer users a saving of 95% compared to the same amount of data consumed through roaming packages offered by the major wireless providers.

The service, which can be hooked up to as many as five devices, has been live in the UK, US and Australia, since December last year.

Globalgig is also planning further expansion by the summer 2013 to provide mobile broadband access across additional European and international business hubs.

Ruckus Releases Mobile WiFi Applications For iOS, Android

Wireless systems specialist Ruckus Wireless unveiled a suite of four WiFi mobile applications designed to assist system integrators, value-added resellers and network administrators in conducting site surveys and wireless LAN (WLAN) performance tests.

The applications also help with remotely monitoring Ruckus Smart WLAN environments and conducting performance comparisons between Ruckus and third-party WiFi access points.

The applications, which include the SpeedFlex, S.W.A.T., Zapper and ZD Remote apps, are each available for free on the Apple iTunes App Store and will be available for Android smartphones by the end of March through the Google Play store.

With the applications, network managers are able to determine where to best place WiFi access points (APs) for optimal coverage and performance. In addition, users can use Ruckus tools, such as Zapper, as a mechanism for making statistically valid performance comparisons between different vendor systems, with the ability to view all the comparative performance data on the same screen.

NextiraOne builds free wireless Internet environment at Warsaw’s Chopin Airport

The Wi-Fi network was designed and built by NextiraOne experts and extends through Terminal A covering its public areas, the entire restricted area, plus the Executive Lounge, VIP sectors and the General Aviation Terminal. The signal is transmitted by 54 wireless access points operating in 802.11 a/b/g/n standard and allows each user 30 minutes of free use of Internet at a maximum capacity of 1024 kb/s. After that time the user is unable to log back into the network, unless he/she uses the network in the Executive Lounge or VIP sector, where the access time is extended to four hours.

iOS 6: Wi-Fi network roaming with 802.11k and 802.11r

iOS 6 introduces support for optimized client roaming on enterprise Wi-Fi networks. The 802.11 Working Group standards k and r were conceived to give wireless clients the ability to more seamlessly roam from access point (AP) to access point within the same network.

802.11K

802.11k allows an iOS 6 device to quickly identify nearby APs that are available for roaming. When the signal strength of the current AP weakens and the iOS device needs to roam to a new AP, it will already know the best candidate AP with which to connect.

802.11R

When an iOS 6 device roams from one AP to another on the same network, 802.11r streamlines the authentication process using a feature called Fast Basic Service Set Transition (FT). FT allows iOS 6 devices to associate with APs more quickly. Depending on your Wi-Fi hardware vendor, FT can work with both preshared key (PSK) and 802.1X authentication methods.

Coupled with 802.11k's ability to quickly identify the target AP, FT's faster association method may enhance application performance and aims to provide a better Wi-Fi experience in iOS.

Free WiFi at Helsinki Airport enhances passenger experience

The free online access provided by Finavia at Helsinki Airport has increased in popularity each year. “The number of users in the wireless network has increased massively in the last 12 months. In January 2013, the number of users was 168% higher than in January 2012,” said Ville Haapasaari, Airport Director.

In fact, user volume is now almost 30 times higher than figures in January 2009. The user interfaces have also changed; a few years ago, Windows installed on a laptop was the main way of connecting to the airport’s wireless network, but now 67% of visitors use the network with Android.

Last year, Finavia improved the WLAN connection at Helsinki by increasing the number of base stations to more than 80 and upgrading the speed rate.

MBTA hopes to expand internet access across trains, stations

MBTA deputy press secretary Kelly Smith said the plan is to provide wireless service to all of the 410 commuter rail coaches operated by the MBTA, on all the ferries and at select train stations — North Station, South Station and Back Bay Stations on the commuter rail.

“Currently around 240 trains have Wi-Fi. With this plan, all trains and ferries will have Wi-Fi,” she said. “We are hoping that [implementation] will start in the fall of 2013, and will finish in about six to eight months.”

About 50,000 commuters use the current Wi-Fi system that is in place on the commuter rail on a daily basis. The current contractor for wireless service on the commuter rail is AT&T and they can bid again for the service deal, Smith said.

MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott said in a press release Friday that increased Wi-Fi service is the next step in providing better service to commuters.
